When setting up a business in Australia, you will be asked to provide several different types of address across different registration systems. "Registered office," "principal place of business," "postal address," and "service address" all sound similar but they are legally distinct, held in different government systems, and used for different purposes.

Using the wrong address type in the wrong field or assuming all your addresses need to be the same is a common mistake that creates compliance problems down the track.

This guide clarifies each address type, what it means, where it appears, and how they interact.

Table of Contents

  • The five address types
  • Registered office address (ASIC)
  • Principal place of business (ASIC + ABR)
  • Postal / correspondence address
  • Service address (ASIC business names)
  • ATO correspondence address
  • How they all fit together
  • Can I use the same address for everything?
  • Using a virtual address for each type
  • Frequently asked questions

The Five Address Types

Address Type Used By Purpose Public?
Registered office ASIC (companies only) Legal documents and ASIC correspondence Yes
Principal place of business ASIC + ABR Where business is actually conducted Yes (ASIC) / Limited (ABR)
Postal / mailing address ABR Where mail is received No (ABR hides residential)
Service address ASIC (business names) Legal document service for business names Yes
ATO correspondence address ATO Tax correspondence No

Registered Office Address (ASIC)

What It Is

The official legal address of a company as recorded with ASIC under the Corporations Act 2001.

Who Needs It?

Every registered company:

  • Pty Ltd companies
  • Ltd companies
  • Other registered company structures

Sole traders and partnerships do not have a registered office requirement.

Legal Requirements

  • Must be a real physical street address in Australia
  • Must be accessible during business hours (minimum 3 hours between 9am–5pm, Monday–Friday)
  • Must be capable of receiving legal documents
  • If it is third-party premises, the occupier must give written consent

What Happens There?

Courts and regulators serve legal documents at this address.

Documents served here are legally deemed served by the company.

ASIC correspondence is also sent here.

Who Can See It?

Anyone.

The ASIC register is fully public and searchable.

Can It Be Different to Where You Operate?

Yes.

The registered office and principal place of business can be and often are completely different addresses.

Principal Place of Business (ASIC + ABR)

What It Is

The address where the business mainly carries on its activities.

Who Provides It?

  • Companies provide it to ASIC during company registration
  • All business entities (sole traders, partnerships, companies) provide it to the ABR during ABN registration

What Should It Reflect?

Where you genuinely operate your business:

  • Your home (if you work from home)
  • A commercial office
  • A coworking space
  • Any other regular operating location

Important

This address should accurately reflect where business activities are actually conducted.

ASIC guidance suggests it should not be a virtual address that you never physically occupy.

However, the registered office (a separate field) can legitimately be a virtual address.

Who Can See It?

ASIC Register

  • Publicly visible for companies

ABN Lookup

  • Residential addresses are hidden from public view
  • Suburb and state remain visible

Postal / Correspondence Address

What It Is

The address where you want to receive mail.

Who Uses It?

The Australian Business Register (ABR) maintains a postal address linked to your ABN.

This is separate from your principal place of business.

Can It Be a PO Box?

Yes.

The ABR accepts PO boxes for postal purposes.

Can It Be a Virtual Address?

Yes.

Many businesses use a virtual address as their ABN postal address to ensure:

  • Reliable mail receipt
  • Better organisation
  • Professional presentation

Who Can See It?

ABR postal addresses are not prominently displayed on ABN Lookup.

The business name and ABN are the main public-facing details.

Service Address (ASIC Business Names)

What It Is

The address where legal documents can be served on a business name registrant.

Who Uses It?

ASIC holds a service address for every registered business name.

Requirements

Must be:

  • A physical street address
  • Located in Australia

PO boxes are not acceptable.

Who Can See It?

Anyone.

The ASIC business name register is publicly searchable.

The service address appears on the register and is visible to anyone searching your:

  • Business name
  • ABN

Why It Matters

This is the address most sole traders and small business owners overlook.

It is also the most common reason a home address becomes publicly visible online.

Using a Virtual Address

A Space Penguin virtual address satisfies the ASIC service address requirement while keeping your home address private.

ATO Correspondence Address

What It Is

The address where the ATO sends:

  • Tax assessments
  • BAS statements
  • Compliance notices
  • Official correspondence

Who Uses It?

The Australian Taxation Office.

Importantly, the ATO maintains this separately from both ASIC and the ABR.

Requirements

There are no specific legal requirements beyond ensuring it is current and reliable.

Can It Be a Virtual Address?

Yes.

A virtual address with mail notification and scanning can help ensure you never miss an important ATO notice.

Who Can See It?

Nobody publicly.

ATO correspondence addresses are private.

How to Update It

You can update your ATO address:

  • Through MyGov
  • Via your tax agent
  • By calling the ATO on 13 28 66

How They All Fit Together

For a typical Australian company operating remotely, the setup often looks like this:

Address Type System Address Used
Registered office ASIC Space Penguin virtual address (Sydney/Melbourne)
Principal place of business ASIC Home address (where you actually work)
ABN principal place of business ABR Home address or virtual address
ABN postal address ABR Space Penguin virtual address
Service address (business name) ASIC Space Penguin virtual address
ATO correspondence address ATO Space Penguin virtual address

This is a completely legitimate arrangement used by thousands of Australian businesses.

The key principle is:

  • Registered office = legal address
  • Principal place of business = where you actually work

They serve different purposes and do not need to be the same.

Can I Use the Same Address for Everything?

Yes provided the address satisfies the requirements for each purpose.

Many businesses use a Space Penguin virtual address for:

  • Registered office
  • Service address
  • ABN postal address
  • ATO correspondence address

while using their home address as their principal place of business.

This approach keeps your home address off public registers while maintaining compliance.

Using your home address everywhere is also compliant but it means your residential address may become publicly searchable through ASIC records.

For many business owners, that is a privacy trade-off they would prefer to avoid.

Using a Virtual Address for Each Type

Address Type Can Use Virtual Address? Notes
Registered office (ASIC) ✅ Yes Must meet staffing and occupier consent requirements
Principal place of business (ASIC/ABR) ⚠️ Technically possible, but not recommended Should reflect where business is genuinely conducted
ABN postal address (ABR) ✅ Yes Commonly used
Service address (ASIC business names) ✅ Yes Must be a physical street address
ATO correspondence address ✅ Yes No restrictions

Space Penguin addresses are commonly used for all of the approved use cases above.

Frequently Asked Questions

If I Change My Registered Office, Do I Also Need to Change My ATO Address?

Not automatically.

ASIC, the ABR, and the ATO are separate systems.

When changing your address, update:

  • ASIC (Form 484)
  • ABR (ABR portal)
  • ATO (MyGov, tax agent, or ATO directly)

Which Address Appears on the ASIC Register?

For companies:

  • Registered office
  • Principal place of business

For business names:

  • Service address

These addresses are publicly searchable.

Is My Home Address Visible If I Register an ABN?

Not usually.

The ABR no longer displays residential addresses on public ABN Lookup.

However, if you register a business name with ASIC, your service address becomes publicly visible on the ASIC register.

Using a virtual address prevents your home address from appearing there.

What Address Goes on My Invoices?

There is no legal requirement to include an address on a tax invoice.

If you choose to include one, it should generally be consistent with your business registrations, typically your virtual business address.

Can I Have a Registered Office in Sydney but a Principal Place of Business in Melbourne?

Yes.

There is no requirement for these addresses to be in the same state.

Many businesses operate with:

  • Registered office in Sydney
  • Principal place of business in Melbourne

or vice versa.

This is entirely acceptable under ASIC rules.

Space Penguin virtual addresses work for registered office, ABN postal address, ATO correspondence, and ASIC service address all from $20/month.
