What the result means
The checker runs the same availability test ASIC uses when you lodge an application.
No identical or nearly identical name is registered or pending. You can apply to register it straight away.
A registered business or company name matches. ASIC will reject the application — try a variation or a different name.
The name contains a restricted or undesirable word (for example "bank", "trust", "Pty Ltd" in a business name). ASIC decides case by case, which can take longer.
Registering a business name does not stop others using it. If the brand matters, also search IP Australia for trademarks.

Register the business name
Once it shows as available, register it with ASIC. Registration costs $44 for one year or $102 for three years (2025–26 fees) through ASIC Connect or an ASIC-registered agent.

- Be distinctive. ASIC rejects names that are identical or nearly identical to existing ones — swapping "and" for "&", adding "The" or changing plurals does not make a name different.
- Avoid restricted words. Words like bank, trust, university, chartered, ANZAC, or anything implying a government link trigger manual review or refusal.
- Don't add a company suffix. "Pty Ltd" belongs on company names only; on a business name it is flagged as undesirable.
- Check the domain and socials too. A name that is free with ASIC but taken as a .com.au domain will be harder to market.
- Consider a trademark. Business name registration is not brand protection. Search IP Australia if the name is central to your business.
